We all love pecans, right? We put pecans in everything we bake...well, almost everything,
Pecan pie, cookies, cakes, brownies, cinnamon rolls, Better Than Sex Dessert, ya....pretty much everything.
If you have purchased pecans recently, you know they are pricey.
They are Higher than a cat's back. (our standard phrase for pricey)
There are many, many perks to being married to an Okie. One perk, I wasn't expecting, is....I haven't bought pecans in eleven years. Since the day we were married, my sweet mother-in-law, and grandmother-in-law, have graciously provided me with bags, and bags of pecans.
They spend hours on their hands and knees picking up the little jewels. Then they spend hours and hours cracking and cleaning out the shells.
On our Thanksgiving trip, I was thrilled to get to participate in the "picking up" part.
For those of you who may be new around here, my little helper is my great-nephew. He has been my "right-hand man" since the day he was born :)
It was a fun assignment, and we ended up with several bags full of loot. I'm tellin' ya, there's gold inside these shells.
I'll let you know how that goes....

LOVE pecans and yes, you were picking up GOLD! They are the best of the nuts and more than pricey to buy. You are one lucky girl (in many ways).
ReplyDeletelucky you! strangely, i do not like pecans. except for butter pecan ice cream. go figure. :)
ReplyDeleteWe spent our Thanksgiving picking pecans at my parents' house. Unfortunately I don't have anyone to shell them for me:( We've always had pecan trees in our yard and it's so weird to me that people have to buy them in a store lol
ReplyDeleteI'm not a pecan girl... but loving your pics!!!
ReplyDeleteI love pecans too but don't use them that often because they are 'higher than a cat's back' here too. What a blessing to be able to harvest your own - for free! It looks like they have an endless supply xx
ReplyDeleteI lived in Oklahoma (Ponca City) for 20 years and have enjoyed MANY a delicious pecan there. Oklahoma pecans are the BEST! You are definitely a lucky, lucky girl. (I also lived in a Denver suburb for 8 yrs., my favorite place in the States. Now I'm in Illinois.............no comment.)
ReplyDeleteI love nuts of all kinds--what treasure you have there!
ReplyDeleteLucky girl with your own pecan providers. I'd much rather pick than shell....
